Inspired by the 31 day mechanism within the Lange 31 watch, we used a 16mm spring-wound 1940’s camera - the Bolex – to expose the film. Traditionally, black and white films thrive on contrast – the extremities between black and white. In this film, our aim was the opposite; to celebrate the flat, monochromatic range of the colour grey, its subtleties and textural qualities.
Textures were teased out of the landscape as we travelled around the dramatic Cornish landscape. Seascapes, moorlands, geological formations and vestiges of old industry were filmed.
The film was then re-introduced into physical space, projected inside a floating installation. Click here to see the full project
